THE LEGEND OF "STINGY JACK"
According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil. 
Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern."WHAT IS HALLOWEEN?
More that 2,000 years ago the Celts celebrated the beginning of winter on the evening of October 31st. November 1st was the first day of their new year and it also marked the first day of winter. The Celts thought that during the winter the dead and the living existed simultaneously because it was on this day that the dead roamed the earth.
Christians changed the history of Halloween forever; November 1st became known as All Saints Day or All-Hallows. The Christians honored the dead on this day too. The evening of October 31st soon became known as All-Hallows Eve and was eventually changed to Halloween.
The ancient festivals honoring the dead revolved around the belief in ghosts mingling with the living. Therefore it is appropriate that ghosts are so often linked to contemporary celebrations.
Dressing in costume is also a very popular way to celebrate the spooky holiday. Dressing up in costumes relates to the Celtic tradition of wearing masks on All-Hallows Eve. People would disguise themselves so that they would be unrecognizable to ghosts.
